Project 2

Structure and Body: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration1: 1

Bamboo Installation at University Square, Taylor’s University, a collaboration with Taylor’s Me.reka Makerspace

In this assignment, we were tasked to use our understanding of anthropometry, ergonomics, tectonics with bamboo and the supporting material combined with our previous understanding of design elements and principles to design a 8m³ shading structure and space for university students’ activities (such as waiting, resting, taking selfie, reading, meeting) which to be located at University Square, Taylor’s University.

Through this assignment I was able to acquire a basic understanding of the properties of bamboo which is the dominant material of this project as well as its tectonics with the chosen supporting material, rope, to create a structure with anthropometry and ergonomics in mind that accommodates the banal action of sitting. I was also able to work with some amazing people to construct this structure. My tutor for this project is Ms YanYee, she is a very supportive tutor as she always would listen to our opinions and she would also give us ideas by showing us her previous works.
