Project 3

Designing with Architectural Principles + Materiality + Context + User: Tropical Wildlife Discovery Unit

Site : Bukit Jalil Recreational Park

Project 3 requires students to design an observation unit denotes ‘a structure at the edge / center of a tropical forest to observe its’ wildlife’. This Discovery Unit should also include tropical rainforest discovery area, resting, discussing, bathroom and a working space. The structure should be within the built-up space of maximum 100sqm and be able to accommodate 2 people, including ourself and a discovery partner comfortably in a short spend of time. It must correspond to the immediate site context. The design of the structure must demonstrate design intentions through the application of architectural principles, materiality and constructability in creating a memorable spatial experience for the user(s) with a list of space requirements.

Throughout this project and workshops I have learned to analyse simple site context and a users’ characters and needs to design a meaningful structure. We were given the opportunity to visit the site physically which has helped us a lot in identifying the context at the site clearly. I am very grateful for the module coordinator, Mr. Shawn, to have conducted workshops for students from studios ahead of us to guide us in our project.
